For any non UK readers or those in the UK living in another world in the last 20 years, “Only fools and horses” was a massively popular BBC TV comedy program.
Two brothers Del – “Delboy” (UK slang for Derek) and Rodney were dreamers and flyby night chancers. They were small south London market traders, salesmen of most things, some legal, some not so.
They lived in a small flat with their grandad (and then later Uncle).
However, they were both quite dim. BUT crucially they also thought that THEY themselves were smart and it was the other brother was the dim wit.
So what’s all this got to do with customer service?
One Delboy catch phrase was “Always ‘finkin Rodney, Always ‘finkin”
(‘Finkin being London dialect for “thinking)
The other day, I got am email following an enquiry I made.
The email started off
“As customer service is not a high priority for us….”
Now – reading the rest of the email, it was clear what the author meant to say was something like
“Our prices are low because the customer/end user is expected to be self sufficient in their affairs and managing their own account”
What the author had temporarily done was stop thinking about the customer.
We are all wrapped up in our own businesses. We live and breath them and sometimes we take things for granted. Like customers…
So be like Delboy and be “always ‘finkin”
]]>With the boundaries of the web being stretched with all manner of applications and different technologies being flung together, the average non technical user can be forgiven for being a bit lost.
It is not uncommon for people buying a new PC or laptop from a high street vendor to have no idea of what software is installed on it.
So which browser plugin do you need? (And which can you do without)
(Note there are browser plugins to do all manner of tasks and shortcuts – especially for the firefox browser – so I have kept this list relevant to people wanting to view video and play games online.
Adobe Flash Player
One of the major reasons why Adobe bought Macromedia in 2005 was to acquire the technology behind flash.
Flash player is free and it allows you to watch videos and animations created using the paid for flash authoring tool. (Or compatible tools)
Flash player will generally prompt you when it needs to update and you should update when prompted. Flash player is installed in over 97% of new computers.
Shockwave player
Shockwave was the format of video and animation outputted by Macromedia Director. However, since the Adobe buyout, question marks persist over the future lifespan of Director. As a result, you probably won’t need shockwave player.
Authorware player
Authorware is a no longer supported elearning application. You should look closely at any sites requiring the authorware player. (Last time I checked, it was quite a large download also).
Quicktime player
Quicktime is a format of video produced by apple. Similar to the flash player, the viewer allows you to watch media created with the paid for authoring tool.
Maybe it is because I use a PC, but I have always found this format to be unreliable and buggy.
Windows Media Player
Good old windows media player. I have no recent experience of this and it is used to watch video rather than animation and games.
So which browser plugin?
The only player you should really need to watch videos is the flash player. That’s the reason why the Sharp End Training courses are made using it.
What about you ?
Which browser plugins have you used and which have you installed and not needed?
can be very hard to find these days. In the 21st century climate of automation, standardisation and one size fits all, everyone is keen to get the sale and make it easy for you to sign up.
But how to cancel?
I have spoken to people who resort to google to search the website of a service provider for details of how to cancel a product or service. Such is the confusing nature of many sites.
So when I found I wanted to cancel a web based service, I was slightly worried. The only cancellation option was an email address, a rather generic looking “Support@…”
This always worries me because generic emails have a tendency to be ignored right?
But I had no other option
In these cases, the usual reply to expect is something like
“Please email again and quote such and such reference number” or “You need to go to (unadvertised) online ticket/helpdesk”
In short, generally making it difficult for you.
But no
In this case, the service was cancelled and the message confirmed the end date and even gave me a few more credits after my subscription ended just in case I changed my mind.
No arguments, no taking it personal (I always try to make my cancellation requests friendly so it can’t be taken personal).
Just good customer service. Thinking about it – a few credits at the end of the contract cost nothing but it may help retain a customer, which is the name of the game.
What about you ? When did you last get good customer service?

Mike is a highly qualified architect and specialises in the conservation/regeneration sector particularly repairing, renovating and improving heritage buildings.
Mike’s knowledge is highly prized and sought after owing to it’s specialist nature. Writing an advert was going to mean expensive design work and printing with a high cost outlay .
So Mike turned to networking.
The networking environment is very crowded and soon Mike was bewildered.
At every turn he was confronted by networking offers – Breakfasts, lunches, evening events, speakers, mix and mingle all free or paid or donations made.
But Mike didn’t know the difference.
Working for a prestigious firm, he had not needed to sell himself.
Which should he choose? Which fitted in with the needs of his fledgling business?
So he came to use for advice
We instantly recommended our basic networking skills course and Mike jumped at the chance.
Mike said “This course really opened my eyes and I would strongly recommend it to any new business, start up, sole professional practice owner or anyone else bewildered by the word ‘Networking’.

If you are a new business struggling to get online, battling with web designers or someone else who has done you a “favour” – then you need to listen up.

Just use code DFFA4CD773 for a WHOPPING 75% discount at checkout.
If you are a new or startup business, one of the first things you will think about is a website.
There are not many business types who do not need a website. Either your market is so specialised and/or niche and you have so few competitors that you don’t need to worry.
And here’s where the trouble starts
People these days have consumer level expectations. The rise of the internet means a level playing field. It means little guys can compete with big guys.
BUT
The internet also means ever shortening attention span. You must get your message over in just a few seconds. People just won’t wait around.
But you aren’t a designer?
It’s likely that you don’t know your DIV tags from your ALT tags. Let’s say you are starting a business because you just got made redundant from your last job.
You want to build a business brand based on your skills.
Learning new skills unrelated to your business is not likely to be on your agenda.
So what do you do ?
Every business networking group has an endless supply of web designers and developers. Most of them either charge a small fortune or just have their own ideas and ignore you. (Or worse both…)
Here is what you need
What if you could build your own site – without learning ANY code or scripts. A kind of push button site building system.
Well now you can
Your package includes the following
We will walk you through ALL the steps required.

NOT High definition

We want you to “follow along” – We will build a site right before your eyes. We want you to be stopping and starting the playhead so much that you will be wearing it out.
Video quality is NOT an issue. Getting your site online is. This course will help you do that.
Get the strategic picture
Downloadable 19 minute interview with Heather Townsend (The Efficiency Coach) on the strategic process of working out what you site is going to do BEFORE you head online and spend money.

It’s kind of hard to be objective because the show has to cram so much into 55 minutes.
Introduce the characters, pay sufficient reverence to Sralan (sorry Lord Sugar) and the current economic climate, provide entertainment and ultimate have someone fired (although technically, they don’t actually work for him).
As if working a 17 hour shift with complete strangers is bad enough – 17 hours with strangers who all seem to communicate by shouting is a true baptism of fire.
All of this (the task) portion has to be edited into a 25 minute slot for the show.
Even I, the viewer, felt bewildered by the fast moving nature of the show.
Just a couple of observations -
1. I have never met a manager yet who says “This is my management style…”
Most good managers just get on with it.
2. Lord Sugar’s observation that an entrepreneur is not something that you call yourself, it is a label other people give you was a little nugget left in by the producer.
3. My son was slightly surprised that people were working (and cutting meat) and 3:40am.
So the Laws of the apprentice were proved correct again – the project manager on the losing team on the first week was fired.
The viewer was left to get their breath back and I for one didn’t a watch the BBC2 show straight afterwards because I felt I needed a breather.
The only other thing is the low key debut of Karren Brady although Nick Hewer was on form without even saying much at all.

]]>You don’t have to move far on the web these days before you come across a twitter teleseminar.
Now, usually these miss the point quite badly because they focus on the wrong thing.
HUH?
How to get more followers
But that’s WRONG.
I read recently that if you have more than 25,000 followers, you are either a celebrity (a real one..) or a fake.
What you need is BETTER FOLLOWERS and know how to win business on twitter.
Ask yourself this..
Which is better, 100,000 followers who never read a thing you tweet or much less even know who you are
OR
A couple of hundred, maybe a couple of thousand followers who hang on your every word and pass on things you tweet like wildfire?
I think the answer is obvious.
The other end of the scale
Is the “which buttons to push” type seminar. Training and advice which is just a glorified demonstration – much the same as you get when you go to an electrical store.
What you need is the middle bit
How to pull it all together. How to make the technology work for you and not be just the latest toy.
One more thing to think about…
Most twitter “gurus” and social media “experts” have never run a successful business OTHER THAN ADVISING PEOPLE ON TWITTER. They are virtual experts in a virtual world.
What you need is a real expert who is using twitter to build a brand and business right in front of your very eyes.
On 19th October, I will be interviewing my very good friend Heather Townsend about how she is using twitter to build her business and brand online. (Oh and we will probably be hurling friendly jibes and insults at each other also – which is usually entertaining in itself).
Quite simply – if you are anything other than a wannabe – you NEED to be on this call.

]]>Picked this up at one of those bookstores which always seems to be full of books that no one would ever want but you get seem to get in and out without buying something.
Anyway, at £2, it probably has more reading in it than a newspaper so ..
So what is it ?
Well, it is a trip round making sense of what people do when they are online and why. It takes several unrelated subjects, prom dresses, women celebrity wrestlers, talent contests etc and explains what I will loosely call “online dynamics.”
It turns out that what we do online is often completely different to what we do in real life. All very interesting and different too.
“Click” shows how our relationship with the search engines has changed in the last couple of years.
A couple of years ago, people would type name and manufacturer of a product. Now people bid on pay per click search engines on serial numbers of spare parts of printers, copiers etc. Because that’s what people type in.
(The book is a year or two old by the way and the current favourites are myspace and not twitter/Linkedin.
No real life “aha” moments (for me anyway – because I work online) but some very useful information making things very boring and technical come alive.
Would I recommend it ?
Well it’s not going to give you the tools to take over the online world – but it’s an interesting read for anyone wanting to understand the 21st Century.
The phone rang the other day and the first sound that I was not the main centre of the callers attention was the general office drone in the background and the fact that the caller finished a conversation in progress before speaking to me.
“Hello, I am from XYZ^%£!”*&^, How are you today?” (I don’t know much about cold calling but I am guessing that the “How are you today was a crude way to try and build empathy”
“OK”
“The purpose of this call today is to gather information about your business”
(Oh right, so you ring me out of the blue and you tell me what the purpose of the call is. Do you know the difference between pull marketing and push marketing?)
“Can I take the business name”
“Umm well you just rang me – don’t you know?”
The caller then proceeded to requesting information, (much of it publicly accessible) which is a lot to be asking straight off the bat with no obvious benefit.
“Now the purpose of this call is to help you get unwanted sales and marketing calls”
“You mean like you ?”
“I’m sorry?”
“You mean unwanted calls like yours?”
“Pardon?”
“Well you ring me up out of the blue and start to sell to me”
“Oh I am not selling, I am promoting”
“There is a difference?”
“Well sorry I know you have a list of numbers to call but you are doing a good job of showing how to annoy people on the phone. Can you you remove me please?”
She hung up on me – result..
