Thinking errors
We came across this recently and thought it was very useful to share. The ability to spot Thinking errors is important to us as managers and trainers because it allows us a handle or a way in to question someone more closely. Some examples of thinking errors include
“All or nothing”
When someone says it’s always like that or it never works, it s a likely indication that they are not thinking logically or rationally.
Discounting positives
Sometimes referred to as the glass half empty syndrome
Jumping to conclusions
Or not listening to the whole of the question before answering..
Mind-reading
“I know what you are going to say”
Magnification-minimisation
Where half empty or half full becomes “1 in 10″ or “9 times out of 10″
Should statements
It’s easy to say what someone should do it is more difficult to actually say how and why..
Labelling
He’s useless, always has been, always will be
Personalisation-blaming
If it doesn t need to be personal - don t make it.
If we hear people saying any of the thinking error statements, it should be setting off a warning light telling us that that person or statement needs delving a little deeper.
