Are you wasting money on training ?

CIPD Exhibition Harrogate 19th-20th September 2007

September 20th, 2007

Sharp End Training attended the exhibition as visitors yesterday and attended an interesting presentation about “elearning progress & prospects” by CIPD sage Martyn Sloman

Martyn made a number of interesting points (the slides aren’t up on the website at the time of writing)

Training & Learning must be governed by the learner and the organisation’s business needs - NOT the interests of software companies.

The debate about learning styles is something of a red-herring. If people are motivated enough - they will learn something. He gave the example of a previous employment of his - Ernst & Young.

The story went that if the word went out on Friday afternoon that by Monday, the team should be proficient at synchronised swimming. Then, by Monday, the team would be the best synchronised swimmers ever - the reason? because they were motivated to learn - by any means neccesary.

Interestingly, in response to questions at the end - he said he had come across no useful evidence of wiki’s being used as a successful learning tool.

Very interesting presentation & overview Martyn, thanks.
